For five Sundays, I attended creative writing courses, from Creative Writes held by Nichola Charalambou. They were held at the beautiful North Bank in Muswell Hill, London, N10. It was all about free flow writing.
Nichola would set a theme, show a picture or start a sentence and we were given 10 minutes to write a piece – non stop, seriously, you can not stop at all – the rules were if you had to stop, you can repeat the question, write a shopping list or whatever comes into your mind even if its repeating the lines you have written –
Nichola unleashed something in me that I thought I was not capable of having/ creating and I spent five very wonderful Sunday afternoons in her and other accomplices’ company. We read out our stories if we wanted to and we all listened. There was no feedback given which was fantastic because it didn’t mean you had to be a professional, or really good at English grammar and no one was going to attack you for what just came spilling out of your head.
Over the weeks, everybody grew a certain bond and a trust toward each other, it was very protective and embracing to hear and to listen and to share. Nichola was brilliant because she listened to what we all wrote and she moulded her lessons to our needs, she listened to our queries and the way we wrote and she would set things around us to help us grow and develop just that little bit more.
I enjoyed the free flow writing so much, because I learned many techniques to get me warmed up. For instance, I can write whilst I am on the tube or waiting for a friend at a restaurant (I get there early just so I can have 10 minutes to write)– I don’t have any fears of starting or of what to write because Nichola has taught me how to not be afraid of what is right or wrong. But to just do it and see what happens.
Why didn’t we have lessons like these at school or college? Where has Nichola been all my life? So glad I have found her and I can truly recommend her courses so much that I have invited Nichola to do her courses for three Tuesdays from 25th January 2011 at my place in London Fields – where we usually hold the supper clubs and I have also offered to make some dinner before we commence with the classes too – where you can donate towards the ingredients.
I paid £100 for 5 Sunday afternoons, the best money spent in a very long time (and I am a shoe lover). It is such great value for money already but she is also offering a 10% Early Bird Discounts too if you book before 14th December 2010.
You can look on Nichola’s website for all the details of times, dates, venues and prices.

Here are some of my crazy fantasties from free flow writing. I don’t even know where it all comes from – everything just leaks out of my black ink penand all you hear is scribble scribble:
